WHITE PAPERS
Assuring IP Videoconferencing Security Across Shared Secure Networks

The costs of Video Teleconference (VTC) system hardware and operation and maintenance (O&M) support make the sharing of a single VTC codec across multiple IP networks desirable in most cases. However, operating a VTC unit on one network at one point in time and on another network at another point in time, presents opportunities for information or images created or gathered on one network to be available on a different network. The first critical issue is to provide positive protection from connecting two networks that are necessarily in close proximity together. Connecting the public Internet to a classified network, for example, would be a disaster of monumental proportion. The second issue is to ensure that any information stored in the video codec that might be sensitive or classified in nature is removed from the codec after the codec is disconnected from the network. The third issue is to provide an easy mechanism where the settings for each network can be captured and restored to the video codec. Finally, issues such as the separation of secure data, air gap isolation between elements of different security levels, and prevention of secure or sensitive information going where they should not must be assured. This whitepaper addresses the security issues and risks, and shows how these may be addressed in a highly assured manner. Issues of facility security or the security of the IP network transport are not addressed in this paper.
